When I saw that A Reluctant Queen was based on a biblical story I frankly felt somewhat reluctant to
read it. You see, I am not a religious person and for that reason I thought I might well find this book to
be a tedious read. I was pleasantly surprised to find that my presumption had been incorrect . The
back of the book states, “You know the Bible story. Now discover the love story”. Because I actually did
not know the bible story, the Love Story of Esther was new material to me and I read the book quickly,
over just a couple of days, since I was eager to find out what would happen next.
As I understand it, A Reluctant Queen is based loosely on facts from the bible and the story is
embellished and changed in parts to keep it entertaining.
In the book, Esther’s uncle arranges for her to be introduced to the handsome King of Persia, as a
prospective Persian bride. Esther is only half Persian, having been born to a Jewish mother and raised
as a Jew. This fact is kept secret from the King, who believes that she is fully Persian. Esther and the
King are married and she is forced to adapt to her new husband’s Persian ways, including having the
unpleasant knowledge of the fact that he keeps a harem of other women. Esther, however, has her
own hidden agenda. Matters are further complicated when she falls deeply in love with the King. You’ll
have to pick up your own copy of A Reluctant Queen to find out what happens next but I feel confident
that you will find it to be an very enjoyable read.

I loved the book! I do know the bible story, but found that it is very loosely based. The main gist of the story is true, but the rest is completely her own story. I too found it a real page turner!
