Recently I had visited a friend who had renovated their garage into a sitting room. The enclosed the garage door and had steps going down from the main house. From the inside this all looked very natural and like the room was suppose to be there. They have a big family like me, and really needed the extra space. Having 1 car they seldom used the garage. This got me thinking.
We really need to renovate our garage. But can I afford giving up the storage space? Canadian winters mean winter sports. My kids have sleds, and discs and all kinds of fun seasonal toys stored in the garage. As well as their bikes, clothes my kids have grown out of and anything of hubs I do not want in the house. If we made the garage into something else, where would I out all of these things? More living space would be great, but not at the cost of losing storage space. plus there is something nice about not having to scrape the snow off of the car in the winter. Just get in, warm up and back out.
I think the extent of our garage renos will be some added shelving to keep it organized and a new garage door. After all the look of your garage doors can really change the look of your house. I am hoping it will brighten up the front of the house. Maybe one without windows would be best as well. No reason to show the neighbours the stuff we have stored in there. For us this is best. Hubs will have a place to work on the DIY projects for the house in the nice months and I will have my storage. A friend directed me to some garage doors in Montreal she saw and they look fabulous.
After we finish off with the garage we will work on the rest of the house. A new coat of paint and some new flooring will really change things up. Al the interior work can be completed over the winter months as long as we stay within budget. We will consider a new deck once we are into the warmer weather again. It will all take time, hard work and a lot of patience. But once it is complete our house will be home. Thinking of changing your garage door openers? Check out Garaga.ca for some great ideas!!
