My kids may be picky eaters but I am always willing to try new things! When we go out I often order the strangest things off the menu. My family laughs, but they know it is often my only chance to try something new. I love trying new recipes and tasting different menu items whenever possible. For years my friends have been telling me about Fiddleheads yet I have never tried them, until now.
Recently I took the plunge and bought some at my local Loblaws store. I love shopping Loblaws as they have such great quality products and a great selection of local produce and meats. I went in and headed to the produce section of the store. I found the Fiddleheads and was happy they were super affordable. Quick glance I realized they were also super easy to cook. The instructions were right on the packaging. Boil with salt then saute. I figured I would give it a try! I knew my children would not be adventurous but greens have always been my favourite.
I brought them home, boiled them for 10 minutes with salt. Drained the water and rinsed. The water looked like tea. I then added them to my skillet with oil and diced garlic. Added a bit more salt and pepper and cooked for a few more minutes. Removed from heat and ate them.
I love that they did not shrink in size. Boiling did cause them to soften up but the size did not change. The garlic and salt seasoned them perfectly. My East Coast friends are so excited I finally gave these a try. I am so happy Loblaws gave me the nudge to check them out.

Each month Loblaws shares a new food that is available for a limited time for their customers to try out. This month was Fiddleheads from Eastern Canada. I enjoyed them fried up, but many people then add them to their favourite recipes. There are many fiddleheads recipes for you to try for yourself.
A part of my money saving journey is to eat foods that are local and in season. I find seasonal cooking is a great way to change up your menu while helping you stick to your grocery budget.
