The holidays are here and in full swing. Most of us are filling up on treats and hanging out with family and friends while exchanging gifts. This season brings stress for many from the hustle and bustle but it also brings good cheer and plenty of opportunities to spread goodwill . Many years ago I was spending the holidays by my son’s side in the hospital. As you can imagine it was exhausting and emotionally draining. I had children home with my husband and felt I needed to be with my baby in the hospital. Luckily we were only there for ten days but it was over the holidays season. I will always remember the kindness of the staff and complete strangers at that time. One morning we woke to a young girl and her dad giving out gifts to all of the children in the pediatric ward. The smiles that young girl brought to everyone on the floor will always be in my mind. It was a truly heartwarming experience. A small kind gesture that brightened everyone’s day and helped the children forget they were in the hospital during the holidays, even if only for a few moments.
Now during the holiday season I try to do what that young girl did. I try to bring smiles to people who are going through a rough patch or are in a situation they can not control. A few ways I did this this year was by donating to the local food bank, adopting a local family for the holidays and also donating cash. I also volunteered at my daughters school and in the community where and when needed. When it comes to helping others, the smallest gestures go a long way.
Giving back is easier than you would think. Sometimes you are giving without even realizing it.
