Make Cuba Your Next Family Destination

School is almost out for the summer and with that comes the worry for parents about what to do with the kids to keep them busy—and preferably off their screens.  For a vacation that offers an outside the box experience in terms of entertainment, a family trip to Cuba will have parents and children playing like kids. With diverse landscapes to explore and an array of only-in-Cuba experiences, the kids will still be talking about their Cuban adventures come September.

Live like a local

A casa particular, similar to an Airbnb, is a private home-stay and is a unique, convenient and cost-effective way to experience Cuban culture. For the ultimate game of pretend that will captivate the kids, visit one of Havana’s four pirate-era forts, such as the Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña. Every night at San Carlos, actors dressed in 18th-century military regalia fire a canon into the harbour. This amazing show has been a ritual for the fort since its construction over 500 years ago when it was originally fired to signal to villagers the drawbridge was closing for the night.

Over in Havana Vieja, young imaginations can run wild in the cobblestone streets with the brightly-painted buildings, classic American cars and quaint neighbourhood museums—the Museo del Chocolate, which is more of a chocolate café than a museum, is sure to be a crowd-pleaser with the kids. With troubadours wandering the streets and theatrical performances awaiting around every corner, children will be amazed with the sights and sounds of the city.

 

A natural playground

Cuba, known for its beautiful beaches, crystal waters and lush landscapes, is a natural playground for families to explore and enjoy. The Sierra del Escambray is a mountain range with all-level hiking trails, horseback riding, natural swimming pools and waterfalls for a full-day of fun for everyone. For an underwater adventure, head to Cuba’s coasts. The white sand and shallow, calm waters are the ideal spot for kids to try snorkeling and discover the wonders of the ocean.

 

A day to relax

After a few days of exploration, taking a day to relax at one of the many all-inclusive, family-friendly beach resorts in Varadero or Cayo Coco can be a much-needed break if the kids are missing the comforts of home. Resort day passes range from approximately CUC $35-70 (rules and prices vary) and include access to the pool, restaurants and activities offered by the resort.

 

A family vacation to Cuba is the best excuse to get children to fall in love with exploring the outdoors and to grow their minds as they experience a culture and a country like no other. So, brush up on your Spanish and get the kids ready for an amazing summer holiday.
