Mountain Biking at Sun Peaks Resort #SunPeaks360

When we travel it is not always easy to find activities the entire family enjoys. Our youngest is much younger than the other kids and loves to do different activities than her big brothers. It makes me happy to let her do the things she finds fun and the boys, well they are two years apart and good buddies. So they can go and do their own thing without us tagging along bugging them. Don’t get me wrong, we do a lot together. But it is nice they have each other when they want to be more adventurous and explore areas their younger sis cannot. Plus I am just not as adventurous as them and prefer to sit some things out.

Earlier this summer we headed to Sun Peaks resort just outside Kamloops BC. We headed up the mountain for a couple of days of fun, food and relaxation. We had not been there since the winter where the kids were enjoying snow and seeing people ski down the hill. Leading up to our trip the boys could not wait to explore the mountain and do some biking. They have done some downhill biking in the past and were excited to ride down a mountain in British Columbia. The hills and mountains they rode before were a lot smaller but still pretty good.

From their site

The Sun Peaks Bike Park offers up 2,000 feet of lift accessed vertical, extended to nearly 2,500 feet with the addition of our new alpine route. 40 distinct trails range from flowing machine-made to fully pinned DH, with the recent addition of various cross country options to spice things up!

Mountain biking has deep roots at Sun Peaks. Our trails are nothing short of legendary and our DH race history continues to evolve, speaking volumes about the caliber of riding. Our park offers exciting options for riders of all ages, ability levels, and terrain preferences, not to mention a full spectrum of camps, clinics, and guided tours to help you make the most of your time on the mountain!

We started the day off at Elevation Bike, Ski and Board shop where you can get everything you need to ride the mountain. Signed a few wavers, geared up for the ride and picked up the bikes. This is also where the boys got their lift passes to take the chair lift up the mountain.  Right beside Elevation is their partner Fall Line tuning and repair centre where you pick up your gear and get your bike fixed if needed. They started off on some easy trails and slowly worked their way up to more advanced courses.

I was happy to see them with all of the safety gear needed to enjoy these trails. The scenery was like no other course they have ever ridden. They loved every minute of it. They spent hours on the mountain together discovering different trails and laughing at each other missing jumps. Brothers like to do that.

If you have your own bike and gear you can just pick up a lift pass and enjoy the bike park from there. It is great that they have the bike rentals on site for us as my teens were still trying to figure out if this was something they wanted to commit to doing often. All bike rentals include a helmet as well. Safety first! After enjoying the trails and park for the day, they were both looking to buy bikes and are planning on buying them for next season. They really enjoyed it!

There were people of all ages and skills enjoying the bike park. If you are not confident in your skills and a bit nervous, you can enjoy Cross Country biking for more of a laid back leisurely experience. We found the entire park to be bike friendly with people riding around in the village at all hours. Lots of places to park your bike if you want to grab a bite to eat as well.

The bike park was a great time for my teen sons and they loved exploring the mountain without mom and little sis. However my youngest was a bit bummed I did not let her ride. I told her she needs more practice before she can tackle such tricky trails. The combination of dirt, rocks and turns along with drops and other riders made me a bit nervous for her to ride. I have no doubt my boys enjoyed having this time to themselves as well. Plus they have a killer view when at the top.

New to biking? No worries!

The Sun Peaks Bike Park offers daily lessons and tours, including introductory packages with rentals, and multi-day freeride camps with pro Dylan Sherrard.

With local experienced coaches and guides to show you the ropes the Sun Peaks Bike Park features the perfect riding environment to improve your bike handling skills and confidence from the lush and mellow valley bottom of Mt. Morrisey to the lift-accessed alpine challenges of Mt. Tod.

There is still plenty of time left in the season to start your own adventure. Check out www.sunpeaksresort.com to plan your trip today! We may even see you there!

Have you ever been downhill biking?

disclosure Our stay and experience was hosted, however as always all opinions are my own.

  1. OMG I can’t believe that your youngest actually wanted to do this too. LOL. Kids are funny. Your boys look like they had a blast! What a view too. Safety gear is also being noted by me. Excellent that everyone has that in place there too. This is such a great resort by the looks of it. All year round really. It is high on my list any time of year.

  2. My kids would love this bike adventure, looks like so much fun! And that view is breathtaking.

  3. What a fun summer adventure! I like that they offer lessons too and that the whole family can partake.

  4. Wow! What a great family-friendly activity! It takes me back to when my girls were young and we would go bike riding together as a family. What great memories we made!

  5. My husband and I have traveled to Sun Peaks – it is a beautiful place! Now that my boy is older, I know he would LOVE the mountain for biking on.

  6. We just have to get there and soon. Looks like a lot of fun and the views are awesome!

  7. That looks like so much fun! I love to get out and be active with the family, and being able to go for a ride like this in such a pretty area is perfect for us.

  9. Biking is one of my family’s favorite activities. This looks like a fun adventure. I wish we had something like this here.

  10. That looks like a great place for a bike ride. I’d love to go there with my family. I think this would be a lot of fun.

This sounds like so much fun. I remember that we rented bikes one year in Colorado. We had fun venturing around but we didn’t take them out on the trail. I think my dad wanted too but we were a bit young for it.

  12. I want to mountain bike. We love bike riding and bought the entire family bikes two years ago. We take the trails in our area and have wanted to mountain bike for a while now.

Wow this looks like a great place for families. My son would totally love this place.

  14. Wow, I admire you! I haven’t even been on a bike in about 18 years, never mind doing mountain biking! Looks like an amazing activity, though, with both exercise and a view!

  15. I have never been downhill biking. At least, not on purpose. I’m probably one of the only people on the planet who forgot how to ride a bike. No joke, the last time I was on one I went downhill… right into a building – wobbling the entire time – accidentally.

  16. How brave. That would be a lot of fun and great exercise. You must be so proud of yourself.
