Family fun at the Pumpkin Patch

This time of year is truly my favourite! Not only is the weather much milder and tolerable than other months, but the landscape around us changes. The beautiful browns and oranges or the fallen leaves is comforting and great for pictures and outings. Family seems to come together more this time of yer and Halloween is just a couple of weeks away. So much fun wrapped up in one month. This year I missed visiting the apple orchard, sadly. I like to go and pick apples with the kids and hang out on the farm. But time got away from us and it did not happen this year. But we did make it to the pumpkin patch last week.

On Friday we headed to a local pumpkin patch and picked our own pumpkins to bring home. It was so much fun and way more affordable than buying at the grocery store. We like our pumpkins to have a little character as well so this is the best way to get some odd shaped ones. There were pumpkins for pies, pumpkins for carving and pumpkins for decorating. Some were really small and others were so big it took a fork lift to lift them.

It always amazes me how much fun my kids have when we are out on the farm. No matter how old they get, this is one of their favourite places to visit. We took a train ride within the farm to get to the patch to find the perfect pumpkin. There were some already picked ones for those who were in a hurry or not looking for so much of an adventure. But for us, this was the best way. Plus it was super fun!

My daughter wanted some of these “bumpy” pumpkins for decoration but we decided to get more traditional pumpkins.

Everywhere we looked there were corn husks, gourds and pumpkins. I went into the store and was able to grab some apple cider as well. My fave for Fall 🙂

As far as the eye can see the fields were full of pumpkins. You could still faintly see the vines they grew on over the summer. We had to be careful stepping over them and they were easy to trip on.

We each picked a pumpkin and loaded up the trunk. Then headed over to feed the farm animals. Another fave of ours when on the farm.

There were donkeys, goats, sheep, chickens and so much more. Each loved the attention and were all so calm and friendly.

It was a fun day! we washed up and enjoyed a picnic on the grass. The weather was amazing as well. The entire day cost us less than $25 and that included taking home some pumpkins and apple cider as well as the cost to feed the animals. The train ride to the field was the majority of the cost. You can not get what we got for that price at the grocery store and you surely will not have as much fun!

I think we will be heading back next week to get some more pumpkins as the teens always like to carve up a few for Halloween.

Have you been pumpkin picking? What do you like or dislike most about it?

  3. I love going to the pumpkin patch. Sometimes, you can find monster pumpkins. Sometimes, they have those weird varieties that are all lumpy and oddly shaped. It’s always a good time.
