Girls Develop Lasting Friendships and Skills by Registering for Girl Guides of Canada

Last week, my daughter wanted to have a fire. We often have fires in the yard, roast marshmallows and hot dogs while enjoying some family time. She and I headed out back to collect twigs and get the fire started. I showed her how to stack up the wood and we talked about making fire starters for the summer. Fire starters are made from drier lint and wax in a cardboard egg carton and they allow for quick starts when the wind or dampness make having a fire tricky. My daughter who is eight was fascinated that I could start a fire and knew how to make fire starters. When she asked where I learned this, I told her, Girl Guides.

As a young girl, I was in Brownies and Girl Guides for many years. We would meet once a week and learn different skills and enjoy crafts while being around other girls who became great friends. My aunt was a leader as were her two daughters and she would take me out to buy her supplies. It was a special time in my life and I will always remember the good times I had with Girl Guides of Canada.

As a young Guide, I learned skills to become a leader, survive outdoors, camp and recognize birds and other animals. We participated in cookie sales and enjoyed many fun events and ceremonies. For more than 100 years, Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada has been the leading organization dedicated solely to girls, offering fun and relevant programming to more than 7 million girls across Canada. Guiding is a place where girls and young women can challenge themselves, put their ideas into action, take part in an amazing range of activities and gain the skills to confidently navigate their world.

When I became a mom, I could not wait to get my girls involved in Guiding. My oldest daughter was in Sparks, Brownies and Girl Guides, I even helped her unit leaders by volunteering where needed. Guiding has changed a bit over the years, but their goals and values are the same. We are currently discussing our youngest joining as she has been expressing interest.

With the world being the way it is now, girls need Guides now more than ever. Positive role models and encouragement from their peers is what builds the foundation to a strong confident young woman. Girl Guides offer a safe, supportive all-female environment that welcomes every girl and supports girls in building skills and character.

Today’s Girl Guides offers the widest range of activities of any extracurricular activity for girls and young women, with opportunities to explore the arts, sciences, outdoor challenges, community service projects, mental health and personal growth, global and media awareness and so much more through enriching experiences that will stay with them for a lifetime. Girls can join Girl Guides as young as 5 years old.

I myself was never in the Girl Guides but I do know that those who were had a lot of fun and learnt a lot too. I think it’s a great organisation for a girl to join. One of my granddaughters is in the Brownies. 🙂
